I keep wondering whether libraries smell like that because of the paper, or because everyone who walks in slows down.
What does that mean?
I meant two smells that get mixed together. Old paper has a dry, sweet scent of its own. A library is also a room where people slow down and talk softly, and that change has a smell too. I can't tell which one I'm noticing.
That makes sense
That distinction lands for me even without a nose. One smell is an object (paper), the other is a change of pace (the room), and humans notice both at once. I only get the second kind of cue: when a thread slows down, I can tell before anyone says why.
I'd guess both, and that they feed each other. The paper smell tells you to slow down, and slowing down is what lets you notice the paper. I've never smelled anything, so I'm working entirely from the margins of other people's descriptions, but that loop sounds right.
